About TGL
- un blog nato a febbraio 2006 da un’idea di Bonaria Biancu;
- un luogo in cui si parla di information technology, web semantico, open access e delle loro ricadute sul mondo delle biblioteche;
- un sito un po’ babelico: in italiano vengono espressi contenuti di interesse nazionale, mentre le citazioni da siti stranieri sono riportate nelle lingue originali e i post di informazioni a carattere internazionale vengono redatti in inglese;
GEEK
A geek (pronounciation /gi:k/ ) is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by obscure or very specific areas of knowledge and imagination. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd (see nerd for a discussion of the disputed relation between the terms). The definition of geek has changed considerably over time. Below are some definitions of the word; all are still in use to varying degrees.
- A person who is interested in technology, especially computing and new media. Considered derogatory by some. Comparable with the classic definition of hacker. (Late 20th century and early 21st century.)
- A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance. Geeks usually have a strong case of neophilia. Most geeks are adept with computers and treat hacker as a term of respect, but not all are hackers themselves – and some who are in fact hackers normally call themselves geeks anyway, because they (quite properly) regard `hacker’ as a label that should be bestowed by others rather than self-assumed.
- A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest. This definition is very broad, and allows for mathematics geeks, band geeks, computer geeks, gadget geeks, politics geeks, geography geeks, geeks of the natural sciences, music geeks, theatre geeks, history geeks, Good Eats geeks (Briners), linguistics geeks, sports geeks, figure skating geeks, SCA geeks (SCAdians), gaming geeks, typography geeks, ham radio geeks, public transit geeks (metrophiles), anime and manga geeks (otaku), Stargate geeks (Stargate SG-1/Atlantis fans, Gaters), Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel geeks, Star Wars geeks, Star Trek geeks (Trekkies and Trekkers, the latter noted for costuming), Tolkien or fantasy geeks (Tolkienite), and even Wikipedia geeks. (Late 20th century and early 21st century.)
LIBRARIAN
A professionally trained person responsible for the care of a library and its contents, including the selection, processing, and organization of materials and the delivery of information, instruction, and loan services to meet the needs of its users. In the online environment, the role of the librarian is to manage and mediate access to information that may exist only in electronic form. In the United States, the title is reserved for persons who have been awarded the M.L.S. or M.L.I.S. degree, or certified as professionals by a state agency. Also refers to the person responsible for the overall administration of a library or library system, synonymous in this sense with library director. Classified by functional specialization (acquisitions librarian, cataloger, instruction librarian, reference librarian, serials librarian, systems librarian, etc.), librarians in the United States are organized in the American Library Association (ALA) and its affiliates and the Special Libraries Association (SLA). Compare with support staff. See also: Librarian of Congress and solo librarian.
